Cotton & Wikelund (2001) state "The earlier in a child’s educational process parent involvement begins, the more powerful the effect" (Wings of Discovery, 2006)
Caregivers and Teachers working together
Children's learning is not confined within the classroom. As children grow, much of their knowledge of the human and natural world is acquired from family members (Wings of discovery, 2006). In order to maximize children's educational potential, caregivers, educators, and kindergarten teachers, like myself, must work together.
To support your child's learning as they participate at school, you can encourage him/her to use newly acquired skills and concepts at home. Whether you're displaying your child's work at home, lending a hand with activities, or working together on the computer, your actions communicate to your child that education is important (Wings of discovery, 2006).
It is just as important to get involved in your child's learning in the school setting. I encourage all caregivers to volunteer, when possible, in the various activities and programs held in our kindergarten classroom. "Volunteering allows [you] to share [your] knowledge and skills, enrich the curriculum, and provide extra services and support to students, such as assisting with [curriculum related] activities", field trips, school concerts, and more (Wings of discovery, 2006). There will be several volunteer opportunities provided in our classroom and the school that fit you best. Our main goal is to make these options convenient for all in order to best support children's education.
